As the New Year hurls towards us, it is time once again to begin searching for new calendars, new organizers and of course, the latest anti-virus software. In my quest to thwart viruses, tracking cookies, phishing, spam and spyware all through the new year, I tried out Norton Internet Security 2009 suite of services. Read here to determine if Norton Internet Security Suite is just what you need or the last thing you need. Features of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009: - Antivirus System Requirements: - Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate**Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 Home/XP Pro/XP Media Center Edition300 MHz or quicker processor Awards for Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009: - October 2008 PC Pro: PC Pro Recommended Award Advantages of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009: It has a high detection rate, as high as Kapersky, and higher than a heap of other services. It is fabulously easy to finish your buy online, and quickly download, install and configure. Even those not computer literate may without apparent effort set up their predilections and the helpful tutorial starts up with your introductory use, instructing you how to use the features. An astounding array of features! My personal favorites include: the identity theft protection, spyware, anti phishing, adware detection, web browsing and effigy protection, as well as the parental controls. Others may like the user name, password and credit card storing and protection. Easy to read tool bars indicate that it is working in the background. There are easy to read, use and ignore “approval” of websites before you visit them. The identity theft shelter utilizes not only the firewall, and spyware shelter but also a storage system for log ins, passwords and credit card numbers eliminating the need to store them anyplace else and allows for ease of use. The Price is Right: It is somewhat priced at $69.99 or you may get the two year download for a discounted price of $114.99. This download is available for up to three computers in your home. The Disadvantages of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009: The most discouraging and hindering thing regarding the Symantec Norton Internet Security suite is that it drags my computer down. I type over 80 wpm, I have assorted windows and schemes open at a time and need to be capable to access these windows, systems and images quickly and easily, for both personal and professional use. This antivirus program makes the computer run so slow that I am sitting and waiting for access to what I need. Just opening my computer for the day with this scheme causes a delay of more or less than 6 minutes just to open my primary window. Customer aid is only free if you use the telephone, and it is suggested to buy the on-line support. I would prefer free client support for the service, after all not everyone is born with a hard drive for a brain and this may keep a great deal of humans from laying out capital in a quality antivirus system. The more I use Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 the less I like it, I have to walk away before I get crazy at how long it takes to use sure schemes on my computer. As long as my computer is open, and I only do one thing at a time, it runs slower, but not a finish stop. However, with more than one window open I systematically get a delay that is so long that I get a “not responding message” while I wait for everything to get in “sync.” The Maddening in regards to Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009: After weeks of the “bad” it gotten down right maddening. Since I can’t have more than one application and browser window open, and my last undertake was for two hours, I uninstalled the system. The vantage don’t outweigh the disfavors for what I need. I want an all in one service package for more than one computer that doesn’t limit my capacity to work. Bottom Line: While Symantec Norton Internet Security Suite 2009 does what it says and is easy to use for scanning, other features are a little too mixing up and the computer slow down would make it prohibitive for those who daily depend on their computer for a heap of tasks including work. The fact that this slows it so much while “protecting me” was starting to feel like going through airport security and getting strip searched because my underwire bra is setting off the machine. I am told that’s for my own good, but I don’t want to do it either. Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 may be just right for computer users who are in general just surfing, buying goods and using e-mail and want authenti anti-virus, phishing, spyware and identity theft protection. Make sure you back up your entire system (I recommend SuperDuper) to a Firewire drive prior to doing this. I also recommend booting into Safe Mode to run the removal operation. ======= 4.1 is simply 4.0 updated to work with Snow Leopard. I am a long time Mac user. Reportedly in development for 5 years, this software does protect from viruses, including protecting your Mac from being a carrier of Windows viruses. However, there has never been an “in the wild” Mac virus. My cable company is offering this suite as part of their service. I installed it, and discovered it was too intrusive, and blocked some programs from accessing the Internet. Unfortunately, there is no customizable firewall. It’s either off or on. Virus scanning is too intrusive, too. The only real reason for an AV on the Mac is to protect Windows users from files other Windows users may have sent you. That said, there is a much better, less intrusive product called Intego VirusBarrier that catches Windows viruses, in combination with the NetBarrier firewall which is extremely customizable. UPDATE: I’ve switched to the free Sophos AV software, and recommend it highly. The problem: After testing Norton and deciding I didn’t care for it, I uninstalled it. However, as I dug deeper into my system, I found the software did not completely uninstall. As with their Windows applications, Norton for Mac puts hidden files all over the place. After the uninstall, I found invisible Symantec files and deleted them. On the next start-up, the Mac wouldn’t start: gray screen of death. It would start up in Safe mode, and once after restarting from Safe mode, but not again. So, I reinstalled Norton, and it works again. This is shameful. I do not recommend this software. Go with Intego or Sophos instead. Or, if Windows viruses are not an issue with you, then you’re probably safe not running any AV. The Mac’s built in firewall is excellent, too. If you really need to feel protected, go with the free version of iAntivirus which protects only against potential Mac threats (which really don’t exist for most Internet users). 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. |
