One of the greatest proclamations from Google at the beginning of 2006 was a collection of free software called “Google Pack.” Google Pack was developed in order to provide computer users with necessary software which Google felt each user necessitated for their new or current PC. One of the programs in Google Pack was free virus shelter software.
The virus shelter software in Google Pack was provide by Symantec the vender behind the usual Norton Antivirus products. The Norton Antivirus merchandise have without disruption received magnificent reviews from independent testers and still stay one of the leading anti virus products. For Google Pack to begin with Symantec supplied Norton Antivirus 2005, even though not the latest version, a more than competent anti virus program. The only limitation was that Symantec would only supply 6 months of virus definition updates after that the user would need to upgrade.
At the beginning of 2007 Google persuaded Symantec to provide a virus shelter program which the user would not have to upgrade from. Norton Antivirus 2005 was substituted by “Norton Security Scan.” Despite the name Security Scan both scans for AND removes virus threats. The product is based on the same award-winning virus scanning and remotion engineering found in the Norton Antivirus range of products. More significantly the virus definition updates are not fixed to six months.
There are a number of other good reasons to download Google Pack. For starters, Google Pack now includes a Starter Edition of Spyware Doctor which is based on one of the best anti spyware programs on the market today. There is likewise an splendid photo organizer software called “Picasa.”

I have no financial incentive to defend PC-Cillin, but this program has been bashed so extensively that I feel compelled to offer a counterpoint view of someone with positive experience.

An Improvement Over 2006

Ok, right off the bat here, I have had virtually no problems whatsoever with the 2007 PC-Cillin program and have been running it for almost two months now (our 2006 version expired end of July). I have a Dell XPS running Windows XP Media Center with 2 gigs of ram.

I’ve used pc-Cillin for several years with good results. The email service that I use is “protected” by Norton Antivirus. Every now and then, pc-Cillin
catches something that the Norton product missed. I’d say that’s pretty good. Also, pc-Cillin doesn’t appear to slow the machine to any noticeable degree. The couple of times that I’ve needed support, they were very helpful. I suggest that you always go for the disc rather than the download version. It’s much handier when reloading a pc from scratch.
