Here is a list of the ten best pen and paper roleplaying games of all-time. Although there is no scientific way to prove the ‘best RPG games‘ ever, this list takes into account the overall popularity of pen and paper roleplaying games since the industry was introductory created.

10 – Gamma World – It’s a post-apocalyptic game, but not in the style of Mad Max. This game fit more into the style of a science fantasy game. You could play all sorts of random mutant creatures, in addition to playing persons that were for the most part normal.

9 – Vampire the Masquerade – Some may argue which is the best World of Darkness product. But Vampire the Masquerade was the game that put White Wolf on the map. Vampire the Masquerade has also become the number Live Action Roleplaying Game in the world. Go LARP’ers!

8 – RuneQuest – This game was considered as one of the ‘Big Three’ at a good deal of point. The big three being D&D, Traveller, and RuneQuest. It provided a dissimilar setting and system than other fantasy roleplaying games at the time.

7 – Champions – Although it may no longer be the most usual comic-themed roleplaying game ever, this game has been around a long time since it was basi published in 1981. The game set the stage for a good deal of other comic book and super hero affiliated roleplaying games.

6 – Tunnels & Trolls – Right after D&D was T&T. Tunnels & Trolls was the second roleplaying game ever created. The game was formulated as an alternate, and hopefully requiring little effort to play, version of Dungeons & Dragons.

5 – GURPs – The Generic Universal RolePlaying System is competent to adjust itself to any game environment. Any setting you may think of has been invented for the system. Its creator, Steve Jackson, is one of the most well-known game designers in the industry because of this game.

4 – Star Wars – Based on the movies carrying the same name, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game was original developed by West End Games using the d6 system. Eventually it moved on to other companies and saw numerous play time under the d20 system, and then at last the Saga Edition. It is the premiere sci-fi, or space opera, themed roleplaying game due to George Lucas dominating the minds of nerds all over the world.

3 – Traveller – Not as famous as it is other space opera buddy, Star Wars. This game, however, did come out as a roleplaying scheme before George Lucas’s creation did. Traveller was primary developed in 1977 and has been going strong ever since. The game is unquestionably considered one of the ‘original’ RPGs.

2 – Call of Cthulhu – A distinctive entry into this list. This horror-based roleplaying game is based off of the works of H.P. Lovecraft. There actually isn’t a popular, comparable game out on the market now. Instead, dissimilar gaming companies have chosen to develop Call of Cthulhu in a potpourri of dissimilar schemes beneath a assortment of dissimilar publishers.

1 – Dungeons & Dragons – The most famous pen and paper roleplaying game of all time. This fantasy game still dominates the market with all of it is respective incarnations, from the introductory D&D to 4th Edition. D&D creators Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson are legends in the industry, just as the game itself is.

Some persons may disagree with the overall placement of numerous of these games. Others may ask why sure games are even on here. Why haven’t other games been included, like Shadowrun, Robotech, Palladium Fantasy, Rifts, or a lot of newer games? Well, they weren’t. This list was developed by veteran gamers and apparently they had a little nostalgia in them. So what do you think of the list of best RPG games ever?

Excellent co-op loot-based tower defense title.

Played this game for about 6 hours straight yesterday with a couple of buddies and had a blast. We got up to the 2nd boss fight before wiping, but were able to adapt our tactics and down the 2nd boss before he got close to our crystals.

I think this game is one of the most fun co-op games I’ve played in years, and I don’t understand where people come off saying it’s repetitive, unoriginal, or that it lacks difficulty or depth. The only problems I’ve had with the game so far are just bug-fix related (a few disconnects and crashes), and the fact that the huntress is pretty much outclassed by every other hero.

I’ve clocked 21 hours into the game (a lot of it in just repeating the lower levels remaking characters on the open vs ranked servers when trendynet was being glitchy, or just restarting characters with new friends, etc), and just cleared the 2nd “act” of 3 last night. I’ve been most impressed with how the boss fights have turned out so far. They’ve all been a hectic scramble between maintaining defenses, healing, dps-ing the boss (or whatever related objective you need to kill), and making sure to replace/upgrade any faltering defenses when you get the chance.

That being said – if you are absolutely against playing co-op and want to try this game single-player, don’t bother. It is a very poor single-player experience, and frankly was never meant to be played as a single-player game. Convince a friend or two to buy the game, or join a game w/ some random people online, but just don’t even bother trying the game solo. It’s 1/10th of what it is even with just 1 other person.

If I had to give a numbers rating, I’d give it the following:

Graphics: 8.5 – Torchlight meets tower defense. The bright visuals can be a little distracting from whats going on, but for the most part they present the action well and give the game a feel of its own.

Sound: 8.0 – There are a few good sounds in the game that you’ll hear over and over (grunting orcs, screaming suicide goblins, ballistae & fire towers launching death at your foes), but I would have liked more sound effects and voice-work from the ogres, bosses, and other more unique mobs. This is not only to give them personality, but as well as to give you audio feedback to help in your defense. For example, hearing a wyvern screech or something would help give an audio heads-up before seeing “An Eternia Crystal is under attack!”

Gameplay: 4.0 for SP, 9.5 for MP – Seriously, don’t bother with the single player. Sure, you can still benefit from mutliple building types, provided you have a hero of a high enough level, but this game was meant to be played in coop, and it excels at precisely that. Almost all of my time playing the game (beyond the first few introductory levels) has been wonderfully frantic.

Interface: 8.0 – During combat, the interface works fairly well. The default setup for the 0-9 keys is pretty solid. Repairing, attacking, and building can all be done on the fly with relative ease. Outside of combat though, there are a few issues I have with the interface.

First off, it is very hard to get any solid stat information out of the dungeon defenders tooltips. As a game that is very heavily based around stats & loot drops, this is a big issue. When assigning skill points, or deciding on loot that increases ‘x’ stat by ‘y’ number of points, you have no idea how much more effective you or your towers will be until you’re in combat.

Also, certain bits of information, such as the number of defense points a particular tower costs, or a brief description of what the different towers do, is hidden behind a few layers of menus when it could be easily added as a tooltip when mousing over the appropriate 0-9 key.

They do have one non-combat UI innovation, however, that I expect to see popping up in games heavily based around loot drops. They have a “thumbs up/thumbs down” indicator that will allow you to tell, at a glance, whether an item is obviously better or worse than what you have equipped. They have a sideways thumb also, for when it’s too close to tell. It was about 90% accurate – I occasionally disagreed with it when I was looking to max one stat in particular over another.., but nothing huge.

This indicator, combined with a “sell all” button that sold all of your non-locked items (you can select to lock items so you don’t accidentally sell them), made getting rid of “vendor trash” incredibly easy.

OVERALL: 9.1 – The game has some issues that need ironing out (mostly bugs, disconnects, and a few interface quirks), but overall it delivers a very solid & frantic cooperative experience that I have enjoyed immensely. This title will definitely be my gaming circle’s go-to title for the next little while.

Dungeon Defenders

I personally was not planning on buying this game. I saw a preview, and I kept hearing about it, but as someone who has never really delved into tower defense games, and not particularly interested in them, I just sort of wrote it off. This game kept popping up around me though, and I ended up watching a video of the devs playing the first 2 levels, and was pretty impressed. After seeing all the cool stuff this game has I went and got it, and I’ve now got quite a bit of time under my belt. The price on amazon is a steal, the game has tons of content for the price your paying, if you choose to play all 4 classes, max level them, collect loot, train pets, play pvp, do the challenges, you just have tons and tons of stuff to do. The game is also being supported post release, there are at least 2 new classes coming, and what sounds like new challenges/maps/loot/pets etc, so expect future dlc. If you intend to play the game as a single player game I don’t recommend this game, maybe another game would be good for you, the game was designed for multiplayer, so try to get your friends to get the game as well otherwise I would maybe look at a different game for yourself. Me and my girlfriend have been playing split screen on the PC and it’s been great fun, not to stressing on medium, and the maps get super chaotic but there is no pressure to complete the map, just have fun getting to whichever wave we get too by ourselves.

If you like tower defense games, I recommend the Squire or the Mage, and if you like action beat them up games go ahead and try out the squire or the archer. I have no experience playing monk yet, and he is recommended for experienced players.

Also the controls are actually really straightforward, I don’t know why the other reviewer seemed confused. I think Mouse + Keyboard is optimal for pc version, but my 360 wired controller feels alright, and my gf uses it well. It’s slightly weird to aim with the ranged guys with controller and to use the camera, it’s much easier with mouse for me.

Dungeon Defenders, A AMAZING little game, Perfection!

Dungeon Defenders is fantastic, it is truly one of the most addictive and fun games around right now. I found myself LAN’ing it with a group of friends for almost twenty four hours straight. It is simple in its implementation but the large amount of activity generated by constant rummaging for better gear and the upgrading of weapons, armor and pets in order to maximize your characters ability to hit stuff or its towers ability to hit stuff is just overall incredibly satisfying. The only thing this game could possibly have to make it better are the 2 extra characters unlocked that they are planning on releasing. If your considering parting with the small amount of money this game will set you back, don’t even worry about it. You will be glad you bought the game.

Enjoyable and Ingenious

Whenever I talk about this book, it’s hard not to make it sound like I am a science fiction junkie. I love and defend sci-fi, but I am not limited to the genre. Neither, I think, is this magnificent book. To label it simply a sci-fi classic would be like labeling “Moby Dick” a great book about boats. All great books, regardless of the genre, say something truly profound about the human condition.

“Ender’s Game” not only manages to have a strong message, but it is also a joy to read. The plot is enthralling, the characters are complex and realistic, and the descriptions of the battleroom fill your head with fantastic images that make you wish your school had been like this, without the burden of saving humanity. The subplot involving Valentine and Peter is superb and cannot fail to inflame every reader’s megalomaniacal side. Though the book is about children, it never condescends and gives kids the credit for the intelligent creatures they are (a big plus for teenage readers). The characters are exceptionally bright, but they are still identified as five- to twelve-year olds, not as mini-adults. It’s no wonder that so many gifted young readers have made the statement, “I am Ender.” I hope “Ender’s Game” is able to make the rare crossover from lowly sci-fi to recognized, so-called “legitimate” literature.

Not only will you not be able to put the book down, you won’t be able to read this book just once.

The Epitome of Science Fiction

This was a book recommended to me by a friend who also happened to tell me the ending before I read it. Remind me to give him a nasty stare!

Anyway, this book starts off with a rather long introduction which the author wrote himself about his influences and motivation for writing Ender’s Game. The author has had the idea of a Battle Room since he was sixteen. Only much later did he piece together the story of Ender and his mission to save the earth.

Ender Wiggin is a special boy. He is the youngest (6 yrs old when the story starts) of a family of child geniuses (Peter being the eldest, then Valentine). This story is set in the future where aliens (called Buggers because of their physical and mental traits) have tried to invade the earth twice. Twice the Earth defeated them, but at great cost. The government is scrambling to make sure this never happens again by training the next set of star fleet commanders from childhood.

In this futuristic world, only the government could sanction the birth of a third child (for population control reasons). In a way, Ender was born for a purpose. Peter and Valentine were both tested for giftedness and they both possessed it; however, he was ruthless and evil, and she was too soft and kind. Ender was a perfect balance of decisiveness and innocence, and so chosen from the beginning to go through Battle School. It is in Battle School that Ender learns military strategy and the history of wars between the Earth and the Buggers. It is also in Battle School that Ender makes friends and molds the perfect platoon leaders.

What’s really unique about this story is that Ender is forced to grow up so quickly by the “adults.” The teachers of the school and high government officials all have one thought in their minds. And that is to eliminate the alien threat at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing the health and sanity of a child. Ender is subjected to so much isolation and abuse throughout the story, that I felt really bad for him. He has to learn to think like an adult through the eyes of a child. His biggest fear is becoming like his brother Peter (who, in Ender’s eyes, is a cold blooded killer — keep in mind that we’re talking about the thoughts of a child who hasn’t even reached puberty) is slowly becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy as he matures. The ending of this story is just amazing. I will not give it away!

I recommended this book to a 13 year old boy before having finished the book. Now I’m thinking twice about my recommendation. Although this book’s main characters are children and centers around the premise that child geniuses will save the world, there are a lot of adult themes and references to ancient history that probably only an adult would appreciate. I believe references to the Warsaw Pact, the League of Nations, Locke and Demosthenes will confuse the younger readers. Also the themes of murder, deception, isolation, rules of engagement in battle might be viewed as inappropriate by parents for their kids. With this in mind, I urge the reader to consider the maturity of the intended audience before recommending this book even though this is a terrific story.

Playing For Keeps!

Ender Wiggin is one of the children chosen by the world government of Earth. For the last three years, from age three to six, he’s worn a monitor-a device designed and used to watch him day and night, so finely tuned that he’d started to believe that it could read his thoughts. Then, when he was six, the device was removed. Ender’s whole world changed. Hated by his brother Peter, loved by his sister Valentine, Ender suddenly became prey for the bigger boys at his school. After an altercation in school and a display of viciousness and cold cruelty on Ender’s part, he’s told he made the program for the International Fleet, the first line of defense against the Buggers, an alien enemy encountered nearly fifty years ago that came short of destroying the planet. Graff, the man from I.F., tells Ender that he qualified for the Battle School program, where Ender will learn how to fight Buggers. The downside is that he won’t get to see his family for ten years. And Battle School doesn’t turn out exactly the way Ender had envisioned it would.

Orson Scott Card is an award-winning science fiction and fantasy writer. In addition to the Ender Wiggin series (ENDER’S GAME, SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD, XENOCIDE, CHILDREN OF THE MIND, ENDER’S SHADOW, SHADOW OF THE HEGEMON, and SHADOW PUPPETS), Card has also written the Homecoming series (THE MEMORY OF EARTH, THE CALL OF EARTH, THE SHIPS OF EARTH, EARTHFALL, and EARTHBORN) and the Tales of Alvin Maker series (SEVENTH SON, RED PROPHET, PRENTICE ALVIN, ALVIN JOURNEYMAN, and HEARTFIRE). HOMEBODY, TREASUR BOX and LOST BOYS are three of his works that heavily involve the supernatural in today’s world. He’s also written two novels about women from the Bible (REBEKAH and SARAH), and several stand-alone novels and other trilogies.

ENDER’S GAME is a wonderful read for old-time science fiction fans that cut his or her teeth on Robert Heinlein. The same depth of character in a young protagonist that Heinlein was noted for is present, and the world-building skills are sharp. At the same time, Card embraces the younger readers of SF by laying much of Ender’s story in action and gameplay. Every young reader out there is living in an SF world when he or she plugs into a PlayStation game, and Card entices those players by showing how much fun his vision of the future is with null-gravity and gameplay. Ender comes across always as a real person with real problems. The pacing is quick, always pulling the reader into the next situation, providing tidbits of information that locks in the bigger picture by the time the reader gets there. Card’s creation of words, situations, and tech-and the ease with which his characters (and the readers!) interface with it-is amazing.

This book is heartily recommended for readers already familiar with SF through Heinlein and Asimov, and to new readers who want a deeper and more immersive experience than the world presented by the latest video game. Well-written books are the closest things to virtual reality that exist at this time, and ENDER’S GAME is one of the best.

First they trade young girls on these teen romance stories. The authorship is good. They draw girls in by glamorizing the introductory kiss, putting it off until the anticipation is closely unbearable. And then, release, the couple gets together, romance is made, the connection is made, and the kiss! The original kiss is never awkward or uncomfortable; it is all with regards to perfection and brings about the idea that all introductory kisses are that amazing.

Girl readers grow up and move onto romance novels where the introductory kiss leads them into giving in and surrendering to the full or entire extent to the passions of their bodies. Many of these stories are when it comes to premarital sex, making it seem acceptable. But the descriptions of these sex scenes may make one feel as if they are in the scene itself. The reader becomes the voyeur of sex played out amongst two expert lovers. Thus, one gets the sense of arousal just by reading a scene. Women begin to think that all sex is supposed to be played out this way and search for the perfective man that may fill those shoes.

Sex amidst a man and a woman never plays out the way it is portrayed in magazine pictures, Internet websites, or romance novels. Sometimes it is awkward, at times funny, or most times it hurts. These avenues of pornography set up untrue images of reality. Therefore, for those who participate in watching or reading pornography, un-reached expected values ofttimes lead to dissatisfaction in one’s sex life causing unhappiness in marriage.

Make no fault regarding it; romance novels are pornography for women.

Low binding quality

I decided to go with this one because the spiral binding appealed to me, able to fold over the puzzles already done without breaking binding. Upon receiving this the spiral binding is not fully centered on the cover and the whole book seems pretty flimsy, like the whole things is just copied off someones home copier, I wasn’t overly happy, but a crossword is a crossword.

A Good First Book on Game Programming

Jason Gregory’s book offers a 10,000-foot view of game engine architecture, covering every system found in modern game engines, and detailing how those systems interact. It details the subjects at a level easily understood by anyone with a modest level of programming experience — even non-programmers can gain a solid understanding of engine design from the book. This would make a great first book for anyone interested in programming game engines, either as a hobby or a future career.

However, it is important to clarify the limits of the book. I do not consider this to be a programming book, since it does not present the material at a sufficiently low-level that would permit an inexperienced programmer to implement a game engine from the ground-up. It describes how the algorithms work in enough detail that you can understand the idea, but does not present complete code examples that would demonstrate exactly how the algorithms would be implemented. There are occasional code snippets, and brief examples from engines like Ogre, Unreal, and idtech. But most of the content is entirely prose.

Experienced programmers/game devs have the coding background to implement many of the designs described in the book from the level at which they are presented. But neophyte programmers will not find enough details in this book to implement a full game engine on their own. However, no one book could do an adequate job of detailing how to implement an entire game engine: learning to program a game engine from the ground-up requires a very large stack of books (especially for physics and AI). So it would be unfair to fault this book for what it is not.

The value of the book is in providing clear, prose descriptions of the functional blocks found in a game engine, covering alternate ways different engines implement certain features, and cross-referencing how those blocks interact.

Another positive is that the book benefits from a mature writing style. Unlike the “Oh wow! Cool! Dude! Whew, math is hard! {BG}” style of writing inflicted upon many intro/for-teens books, this book can be read by adults (and most teens) without any undue eye-rolling due to bad writing. Which, sad to say, is why I feel inclined to remark on this point. Granted, this book was written for a course a SoCal, so a more mature writing still is required. I do wish more games-related books would follow this convention, instead of assuming the reader is mentally bereft or a pre-teen.

Surprisingly good book

As the other reviewer said, this is a very solid, good book. Dare I say refreshingly good. I also echo the previous reviewer’s sentiment about the tone that the author takes when speaking to the reader. Some people enjoy comical books but I am not one of them. I read books for information, if I want to laugh I’ll open xkcd.

Where this book really fills a void is that it assumes you have some experience and maturity under your belt as a programmer / engineer. This is good because it allows us to get down to the meat without hesitation and begin discussing more serious things. What this book is NOT is a book on how to implement a game engine. What it IS is a book on what’s in a game engine and common problems and pattern that occur in game engine development. A toolbox of game engine development, if you will. For each chapter / topic, the author devotes some time to explaining the role of this aspect of a game engine and then quickly proceeds to breaking the component down into smaller pieces, discussing common issues, algorithms, and patterns that arise for said system. For example, when discussing memory usage there is a great discussion of a variety of different memory allocators that can be useful in various situations. Almost always the author supplements these discussions with real-world examples of where such a data structure, algorithm, or method was used in an actual game and why.

Another aspect of this book that I really really appreciated was the inclusion of references directly in the text. Since, after all, the book is light on implementation details often the author would conclude a section by saying “So and so has an excellent paper discussing this topic in more detail at .” This is great because it allows the book to still provide access to all the implementation details without actually putting them in the book. So it’s not like you’re actually missing out on anything, you just have to go to the link.

The book is thick, and has a strong and serious hardback binding. It feels like it will last a long time. I don’t think it’s necessarily the type of book that you will refer to over and over throughout your game development career, but it offers a great bird’s eye view of the entire process, while still allowing you to zoom in on specific areas and get a little bit more detail (or a lot more detail if you follow the links to the external references).

There are a couple minor errors in the book, but they are not that serious and I assume they will be corrected in the first errata and/or second edition of the book. They do not significantly detract from the overall quality of the book however, so I give it 5 stars anyway.

This book was definitely a pleasant surprise, and I only wish more authors would stop filling their books with fluff to hide the fact that they don’t have enough information to fill the book. This book is packed with information, with zero fluff, and I definitely recommend it.

All you ever wanted to know about game engine but been afraid to ask

Jason has years of practical experience in the gamedev (Midway, EA, ND) and it really shows. There are too many books out there written by people who have never shipped anything bigger. This is not the case. When he writes how to do/don’t something, he usually backs it up with a real-world scenario. Game engines are vast topic and it’s impossible to cover everything in detail, so obviously it’s a collection of general information, rather than a very in-depth analysis.
It’s truly invaluable for juniors and hobbyists, because it’s an unique position describing how professional engines work. It may be less useful for senior developers as they probably won’t learn that much. Still, it’s rare to be an expert in every area, so it’s safe to assume everyone will find a chapter with new information as well. Big parts that are missing are networking and audio, both huge topics, but I feel like they deserve at least few pages.
To conclude: if you’re a junior/amateur programmer or student – get it now. It should also be an obligatory buy for every company’s library. If you’re senior developer who’d like to broaden his view a little bit and see how it’s done at other places – it’s worth buying as well. It won’t make you an expert, but it’s a good start and gives at least a rough idea how other engine systems work.

It must have been a crushing blow. It was 1934, the depths of the Great Depression. Charles Darrow was unemployed. But, he had an idea. Actually, he had a board game. He called the game Monopoly. He liked the board game and felt it was his ticket to financial success and out of the desperation of the depression. Darrow had taken his game to the famous Parker Brothers game company to publish and aid him sell.

The Parker Brothers had accorded to look at the board game for Darrow. They were not impressed. Formed in 1883, by 16-year-old George Parker, the game publishing company had been making and selling games and puzzles for 51 years. During that time they had seen success and failure. Parker Brothers knew the game business. They knew what worked and what didn’t. They knew what sold and what didn’t. Representatives of the giant game company found 59 reasons why they did not think Darrow’s game could be successful.

Charles Darrow plainly didn’t agree. He believed. He decisive to publish Monopoly himself and market it through section stores. He had 5,000 copies of the board game printed.

Hope was scarce for the duration of that harsh Christmas of 1934. Money was even scarcer. And, Monopoly was a hit. Nearly all 5,000 copies of the board game sold. Within a year Parker Brothers was publishing the game. It was the best marketing game in America by 1936.

Monopoly is now published in 89 languages and over 200 million copies of the board game have been sold. More than 500 million humans have played the game. It has likewise been adapted as an electronic game. Monopoly is with resolute determination entrenched as the best selling board game of all time.

Monopoly is a relative upstart equated to other frequent board games.

The oldest known board game is called “The Royal Game of Ur” or the “Game of 20 Squares”. This game was came across in a 4,500-year-old tomb in southern Iraq. This game has likewise evolved over the centuries. By the 12th century the game was adapted to the 64-square chessboard. Four hundred years later the rules involving capture were added, yielding basically the same game we play today.

There is plainly no way to tell how a heap of copies of chess or checkers have been sold or how some people have played these games. If the numbers were known, they would have to be veritably staggering.

Popular Board Games Share Common Traits

Other top selling board games include Yahtzee, Scrabble, Mahjong, Trivial Pursuit, Battleship and the Risk game. Most of these games were developed for the duration of the 20th century and all are still huge vendors and tremendously popular.

These standard board games part a heap of similar traits. Most of them implicate specific schemes of play. When these schemes are employed successfully, the games are fun, challenging and intensely rewarding as players try to capture portions of the board and/or each other. Another mutual factor in most of these board games is chance, or luck. Luck is introduced commonly by drawing cards or rolling dice. The factor of probability opens up future prospects or potentials for even more schemes of play. A final crucial trait of these games is that in one way or another they reflect the lessons of life. They instruct contest and sportsmanship. They instruct scheme and the lesson of never giving up.

Perhaps that is why Charles Darrow was so attracted to Monopoly. He believed that success comes by employing sound schemes to following a dream and never giving up. We are glad that Darrow didn’t give up. We are glad he didn’t throw the board game with 59 things faulty in the trash bin as he left the Parker Brothers plant in 1934.

There are good reasons this is your kid’s first board game

…there are several good reasons why “Candy Land” is the first board game children learn to play:

First, the game does not require children know how to read. They do not even need to know their numbers as they do in “Chutes and Ladders.” Movement is based on a child being able to recognize colors and symbols. What could be easier than that?

Second, the game is based on luck (or chance or divine intervention or however you want to characterize it), which means it is a great equalizer. This is a game where a kid has the same chance of winning as their parents, older siblings, grandparents, babysitters or whoever. Children are not going to be interested in playing a game they cannot win, which is why “Candy Land” is where they begin instead of “Monopoly” or “Trivial Pursuit.”

Third, the game teaches the basic skills of board games. The hardest lesson kid have to learn with this game is to…take turns. Yes, this might be one of the first times in their young lives when kids are confronted with the regiment of structure that will afflict them the rest of their lives. But from board games like “Candy Land” to sports like baseball, structure and rules are a basic consideration. Strategy and tactics come later, but learning to take turns comes first (and I could argue is a basic lesson in civil behavior).

Therefore, I would respectfully submit that “Candy Land” remains the ideal choice for the first board game you play with your children. Just pick a card, move to the appropriate square, and proceed to have a great life.

A classic kids game.

I remember playing Candyland as a child, so it is another game that has passed the test of time. It is simple, and it does not require reading skills, so very young children can play the game. It is good for practicing colors and for taking turns and following rules. I do feel that the game is a little long, especially for the 3-year old kids in the recommended age range. Some of the rules, like getting stuck until a certain card is drawn, makes the game rules a little more difficult to follow, so in that way I would recommend it more for a 4-6 age group. A 3-year old can play it with a lot of supervision, but some of the rules are hard to understand at that age – especially when they can draw a card but can’t move their game piece! The game is very inexpensive, and therefore the quality of the actual game is not great. I agree with another reviewer that a “classic gold” edition with wooden pieces and a durable box would be a wonderful option for someone who would like the game to last. It would also be nice to have a nice spot to put all of the cards during the game and for storage. Despite the length of the game and the durability factor, I would still highly recommend this classic game to parents with small kids, especially those in the 4 – 6 age range.
