Be very careful when it comes to opening emailed greeting cards, as galore are now known to incorporate dangerous spyware. Originally invented as a means for spouses and lovers to spy on each other, e-greeting card spyware was designed to monitor the internet action of the recipient, thereby sending the sender an emailed record of email activity, passwords used, etc…

Although this type of “monitoring” software is legal to buy and is intended for non-criminal use, it provides a new tool for con artists and cyber-criminals to use.

Here’s how these spyware ridden e-greeting cards work: The recipient gets an innocent looking romantic email message with an attached or linked greeting card. The email appears to legitimate, and says something like “I love you”, “I was just thinking regarding you”, etc… When the card is opened or the link clicked on, dangerous spyware is silently and instantaneously installed on the computer as the recipient reads the card.

Once installed, the spyware begins monitoring immediately. The software runs silently in the background, and is undetected by the user or her antivirus software. It records all the emails that are viewed, as well as all passwords that are entered. It also records all chat and instant messaging sessions, and logs each single web site that is visited. All this selective information is sent directly to the person who sent the email greeting card, be it a lover or a criminal.

If you get an e-greeting card, think with regards to it conservatively before opening it because there’s a good chance that it’s spyware in disguise. Even if the card appears to come from a lawful e-card company such as American Greetings, Blue Mountain, Yahoo Greetings, etc…, this is no guarantee that the email isn’t spoofed. Spammers and internet con artists have mastered the art of sending emails that appear to be from rightful sources, and spyware e-cards may be without apparent effort dissembled with phony “from” addresses as well.

It’s a good idea to check the header data on any email you want to open, but may be suspicious. An email header shows the history of the email as it has traveled through the internet, and will disclose a spoofed “from” address. As all email clients are different, click on the “help” menu and search for “internet header” to see how to carry out this task with your queer software.

If you are running anti-spyware software that is current with it is updates and are sure that your operating system and browser are up to date with the latest security patches, your probabilities of getting infected by a spyware-tainted e greeting card are scaled down significantly. Even having the best shelter available is no guarantee that you will be competent to keep out of the way of a spyware infection, though. New variations of spyware come out each day, and your shelter is only as good as your latest update.

As with all potentially distrustful emails, your best defense is the “delete” key. If you don’t click on hyperlinks or open email affixations within any e-mail messages that might be questionable, you cannot get a dangerous spyware infection. Because we are only humane however, and the danger of spyware is so great, it is advisable to include a good antispyware product in your computer security arsenal.

Some magnificent antispyware merchandise to consider are AVG Anti Spyware, Sunbelt Software’s CounterSpy, and eTrust Pest Patrol.

I installed Pest Patrol last year and it was fairly easy to use but I found the interface to be lame and the instructions confusing at times. When my subscription expired I tried CounterSpy which detected nearly 200 Spyware/Adware infections immediately after a Pest Patrol scan. CounterSpy also removed several hijacking problems that Pest Patrol did not. The CounterSpy interface is easy to use and understand is way ahead of Pest Patrol in this regard. I also use the free version of Ad-Aware and my PC has been running great. I run XP and have had no problems although I have heard of problems with other OS’s.

1Good Product Gone Bad

This was once the best Antispyware program by far, but now that Computer Associates bought it and produced version 5. I must now try to find a new program to use. The user interface is now absolutly terrible and licensing checks every time the program is started is totaly annoying. This should now be put in the dumper along with CA’s EZtrust products. Stay Away!!

5Blows away the competition

I have installed this on multiple occasions, many times on PC’s which were virtual “typhoid Marys” with many instances of spyware. Some PCs had “Spybot” or “Adaware” or some other such product which was having no positive effect in either identifying, let alone eliminating, the threats.

After installing and running this, the program provides very specific instructions and explanation of what’s going on. You can set up automatic updates for complete protection going forward. Great software, great price.
